Back on Dec. 10, 2010, the Eskimos named Kavis Reed as its 19th head coach in franchise history. As the old saying in sports goes, “coaches are hired to be fired.” Fast forward all the way to Nov. 4, 2013, Eskimos General Manager Ed Hervey announces the firing of Reed after three seasons.“It is my feeling that our club is at a stage that is critical to our on-field expectations,” Hervey said. “This move was necessary.”Considering what happened this season with the Eskimos, this move is nowhere near a surprise. The Eskimos managed to be in the playoff picture for a short time in mid-September, but then lost five-straight games before ending the season just a few days ago in Regina with a win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.Reed was dropping some subtle hints during the last four weeks that he wouldn’t be back. Subtle turned to strong on Sunday afternoon, as he met with the media during locker clean out day as the club officially wrapped up their season. In fact at the end of his media scrum, Reed said, ”Thank you for three very good years.” Reed says he bleeds green and gold and calls the chance to coach the Edmonton Eskimos “a dream job.” but he accepts the way it ended.“You know, you don’t write that script this way,” Reed said. “You would write that script with a few championships and riding off into the sunset but that’s not the way it happened. As a man you look at every situation and you get the lessons out of it. You get the experience, it hasn’t been bad. It may have not ended the way that I wanted it to. This has been a tremendous growth process for me.”So how did we get to here? Eskimos part ways with Reed Timeline: Reed in Edmonton Reed enjoyed a solid 2011 season with veteran laden group led by quarterback Ricky Ray. The team hosted their first playoff game in seven years and the Eskimos reached their first Western Final appearance since the 2005 season. Reed was a Coach of the Year candidate as well. The troubles came for Reed the following year thanks to events like the Ricky Ray trade, the loss of Rich Stubler, and a trade for a kicker who quite frankly, has trouble kicking (Brody McKnight). The price for that was only a first round pick, third overall, surrendered to the Montreal Alouettes.Reed survived the managerial changed from Eric Tillman to Hervey. During Week 2 of the season, Hervey extendedhis head coach's contract. At that time Hervey said Reed was his coach to lead the rebuild. But for a rebuilding team, it would have been a better accomplishment to fight for a playoff spot to the bitter end.So how does this all relate back to Kavis Reed? The record for starters hasn’t been good enough in the last two years. Reed is 11-25 during that span and only produced six wins since Labour Day of 2012. What hampered Reed was the constant chaos that would take place on the sidelines game in and game out.Things you just don't see very much from other football teams. As hard as the team played this year, the same issues were talked about from Week 1 until the end of the season. Penalties, missed assignments, sideline confusion, dropped balls, and turnovers. This isn’t all on Reed. A new coach will be brought in who will, as Ed Hervey says, have more detail and structure to the game. The team itself needs to be better in several areas like in offensive line, the run game, the run defence, and kicking. Hervey says the club is at a critical stage right now. It is critical for him to hire the right coach who will hire the right staff. It's also equally critical for Hervey to identify where the holes are, and fill them so that winning football will return to Edmonton and Commonwealth Stadium.Another interesting off-season has kicked-off in Edmonton.
